Just over a year ago, in the early hours of 7 July, a man sneaked into her home and poured the acid over her face. Her neighbour, Nazar Hussain, is now on trial for attempted murder. Prosecutors say he wanted revenge because Zarina had rejected his advances. On that hot July night, Zarina had drifted off to sleep around 0300, only to awake with a burning sensation on her face and upper body. "I'm on fire!" wailed the 18-year-old girl, a wife and mother of a four-month-old baby, as her face began to dissolve.

It seems to be the rage -- excuse the pun, for men in Pakistan to burn women at the slightest pretext. It has been going on for many long years and the disease shows no sign of abating. In fact it is registering a healthy increase. There is no Muktharan Mai to symbolise the victimisation of hundreds and hundreds of these women. No saviour to shake the conscience of the world. No powerful woman to move the government to provide built-in recourse to victim-friendly laws. There is no one from among them to receive the attention of foreign support groups, NGOs and other humanitarian organisations. Hillary Clinton may know the plight of Muktharan Mai but she has no idea of the hundreds of Mukhtarans living out their existence hideously deformed by men who are many notches lower than the most bestial of beasts.

A hitherto unknown group calling itself the Just Swords of Islam issued a warning to Palestinian women in the Gaza Strip over the weekend that they must wear the hijab or face being targeted by the group's members.

In pamphlets distributed in various parts of the Gaza Strip, the group also claimed responsibility for attacks on 12 Internet cafes over the past few days.

The warning was directed primarily against female students in a number of universities and colleges who do not cover their heads in line with Islamic tradition.

The group said its followers last week threw acid at the face of a young woman who was dressed "immodestly" in the center of Gaza City. They also destroyed a car belonging to a young man who was playing his radio tape too loudly.

Ask anyone you meet in Bangladesh today and they will tell you what to do in case of an acid attack. You immediately douse the victim with water.

They know because they have seen the TV spots in which bystanders immediately drench a screaming woman with water after a young man throws acid into her face because she rejected his advances. Many Bangladeshis also know that there is a hospital in Dhaka, the capital city, where acid survivors can receive free medical treatment and legal assistance and that a telephone hotline is available to connect them with these services. They know that there are new tougher laws against acid crimes. It's a public awareness that has been created through countless posters, brochures, radio announcements, TV spots, newspaper articles, theater performances, and public rallies -- all the work of the seven-year-old Acid Survivors Foundation and its tireless executive director, 41-year-old Monira Rahman.

There is growing fear among women in Indian-administered Kashmir after a number of acid attacks in the capital, Srinagar. Police say unidentified persons threw a bottle of diluted acid into a passenger bus in Srinagar on Tuesday. Three women and a man received burn injuries.

On Monday, two girls, aged about 15, were attacked with acid in the Maharajgung area of the city. Police say they are investigating both incidents, but have yet to reach any firm conclusion regarding the motive.

Islamic dress!

However, a local newspaper reported that a group called Lashkar-e-Jabbar had claimed responsibility, saying such attacks are a part of its campaign to enforce an Islamic dress code among women.

Veiled women!

Most women don't wear the full veil. Various newspapers have noted that Islamic militant groups - who are fighting Indian rule - have been silent over the incidents.
