This event happened on 18.06.2009: An "unusual event" declaration Thursday night at Beaver Valley Nuclear Units 1 and 2 in Shippingport was triggered by what turned out to be a false alarm, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission said Friday. According to a news release from NRC spokesman Neil Sheehan, the nuclear facility declared an unusual event at 9:39 p.m. Thursday because of a fire alarm in the emergency response facility substation. Todd Schneider, a spokesman for FirstEnergy Corp., which owns the facility, said the substation building contains electrical equipment. The building is not connected to the reactor buildings. Carbon dioxide, which is used as a fire suppressant, was released inside the building to eat up oxygen in the air, which would stop any fire. A fire brigade eventually determined there was no fire in the building. There were no injuries and no equipment was damaged, according to the NRC. The unusual event was declared over at 10:36 p.m. According to the NRC, an unusual event is the lowest of four emergency classification levels used by the agency at a nuclear plant. In this classification, there is no threat to public safety.)
