It sounds like something out of a bizarre science fiction comic book, but scientists have weaponized the H5N1 bird flu virus, and are actually considering releasing the research.

The experiments, which involved mutating the virus a total of 5 times, made the strain highly contagious between ferrets — the very animal model used to study human flu infection.

Of course many scientists are now warning that if such research was made public it could result in the construction of deadly bioweapons.

Making the virus highly contagious could result in widespread infection. The H5N1 virus has been infecting birds and other animals in recent years, though it has also infected around 500 people.

The reason that it has not become an epidemic is due to the fact that affected humans are usually not very contagious. Therefore, altering the virus to become highly contagious is quite possibly the deadliest tweak which could be done.

It seems that these scientists are just asking for the new weaponized bird flu virus to infect the public.

Bioterrorism fears arise as scientists push to release weaponized bird flu research

Dr. Thomas Inglesby, a bioterrorism expert and director of the Center for Biosecurity of the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, notes that it is simply a bad idea for scientists to militarize bird flu, let alone publish the results:

‘It’s just a bad idea for scientists to turn a lethal virus into a lethal and highly contagious virus. And it’s a second bad idea for them to publish how they did it so others can copy it,’ says Inglesby.

So far no scientific journal has published the findings, and Inglesby hopes that none of them will. Virologist Ron Fouchier of the Erasmus Medical Center in the Netherlands is responsible for weaponizing the virus and presenting the findings at a flu conference held in Malta. He has recently come under attack by an organization known as the National Science Advisory Board for Biosecurity, a committee of independent experts on biological research.

Ron Fouchier says that mutating the virus to become highly contagious is shocking enough, but the fact that some scientists are now pushing for the release of the research is beyond outlandish.

It seems apparent that these scientists have zero regard for public health.

Genetically altered H5N1 strain can spread between mammals

A highly contagious mutant strain of H5N1 bird flu that can be transmitted between mammals has been deliberately created at Rotterdam’s Erasmus Medical Centre, the London Independent reports.

Now plans to publish details of how the deadly virus was created in the lab are being castigated by government officials and health experts.

The findings were scheduled to be published in the US journal Science, however, officials at the National Science Advisory Board for Biosecurity have demanded that they be allowed to screen the details first.

“The worst-case scenario here is worse than anything you can imagine,” an anonymous senior US government advisor told the Independent.

“The fear is that if you create something this deadly and it goes into a global pandemic, the mortality and cost to the world could be massive.”

In comments to The London Telegraph, EU Health Commissioner John Dalli said that the Dutch government has assured him the virus is being kept secure.

“The Dutch authorities confirmed that the virus itself is stored in a very secured way and that the necessary permits were given and that the researchers are bound by a code of conduct,” Mr Dalli said.

“One of the issues … is to ensure that any information coming from this research is well controlled and without sensitive details about mutation being given,” he added.

The ultimate fear is that the virus could escape the lab, or be recreated somewhere else for nefarious purposes, such as a deadly bioweapon.

H5N1 bird flu has proven fatal in 60 per cent of human cases. However, only a small amount of people have died from the disease because it has not yet been transmitted between humans.

Ron Fouchier, the virologist who led the research team that created the mutant flu strain, said that the study had concluded that transmission of the H5N1 virus was possible between humans “and can be carried out more easily than we thought.”

“In a laboratory, it was possible to change the H5N1 into a virus … that can easily be spread through the air. This process (mutation) could also happen naturally,” Fouchier said.

Conceding that it is “probably one of the most dangerous viruses you can make”, Fouchier has said that his work is “really, really stupid,” but ultimately useful for the development of vaccines.

In 2009, Infowars reported extensively on the fact that vaccines contaminated with the deadly avian flu virus were distributed to 18 countries by the American Pharmaceutical company Baxter.

Baxter mixed the deadly H5N1 virus with a mix of H3N2 seasonal flu viruses. The H5N1 virus on its own is less airborne and more restricted in the ease with which it can spread. However, when combined with seasonal flu viruses, which are super-airborne and easily spread, the effect is a potent, super-airbone, super deadly biological weapon.

While some dismissed the incident as criminal negligence, others contended it may have been part of a conspiracy to provoke a pandemic.

Hong Kong health authorities are slaughtering more than 17,000 chickens at a market after a chicken carcass there was found to be infected with bird flu.

Officials in the southern Chinese city said today that the bird tested positive for the dangerous H5N1 strain of avian influenza. They have also banned live poultry imports for three weeks and are trying to determine whether the infected chicken was imported or came from one of Hong Kong’s 30 chicken farms.

Agricultural officials have inspected all 30 farms but found nothing unusual.

H5N1 occasionally infects people who have close contact with infected poultry, particularly in parts of Asia. Globally, 331 people have died from bird flu since it was first detected in 2003.

Attempts to censor details of controversial influenza experiments that created a highly infectious form of bird-flu virus are unlikely to stop the information from leaking out, according to scientists familiar with the research.

The US Government has asked the editors of two scientific journals to refrain from publishing key parts of research on the H5N1 strain of bird-flu in order to prevent the information falling into the hands of terrorists intent on recreating the same flu strain for use as a bioweapon.

However, scientists yesterday condemned the move. Some said that the decision comes too late because the information has already been shared widely among flu researchers, while others argued that the move could obstruct attempts to find new vaccines and drugs against an infectious form of human H5N1 if it appeared naturally.

Professor Richard Ebright, a molecular biologist at Rutgers University in Piscataway, New Jersey, said that the research, which was funded by the US Government, should never have been done without first assessing the risks and benefits.

A Chinese man infected with the H5N1 bird flu virus died on Saturday, marking China’s first case of the disease in humans in 18 months.

The news comes just days after the United States government frantically acted to block the full publishing of research that successfully mutated the H5N1 virus to be highly contagious.

Killing around 60% of those infected, experts have consistently warned about the dangers of the bird flu virus and the potential bioterrism threat posed by the heavy mutation of the virus to be hyper-contagious.

While there has been no indication that this is a result of a weaponized strain of the virus, the affected man is reported to live in the Chinese city of Henzhen, a metropolis of 10 million people. In the event that the virus were to be weaponized, it could result in millions of deaths.

Amazingly, despite concerns over the study being released to the public, the World Health Organization (WHO) has actually stated that such research ‘must’ continue. The organization also failed to mention the fact that the full release could threaten millions of lives, stating that it “has risks.”

In response to the study potentially being released, the WHO stated:

While it is clear that conducting research to gain such knowledge must continue, it is also clear that certain research, and especially that which can generate more dangerous forms of the virus than those which already exist, has risks (emphasis added).

Some such research includes mutating and weaponizing the bird flu strain in order to create H5N1 bird flu vaccines. These vaccines will be created to ‘treat’ the 573 bird flu cases reported since 2003. Meanwhile, the results of such research actually threatens the lives of 60% of the entire globe based upon the projected death rate of the virus.

It is essential to boost your immune system in order to prevent all types of flu, not just bird or swine. In addition to generating or supplementing with enough vitamin D to slash your risk in half, you should avoid processed foods, eat a diet high in nutrient-dense foods, and drink half your body weight in ounces of purified water each day.

Twelve Americans have been reported infected with a mutating and now possibly human-to-human transmitted form of the H1N1 Swine Flu virus called H3N2v.

An investigation undertaken by the U.S. Center for Disease Control and Prevention found that human infections of these viruses followed contact with swine as well as through ‘limited human-to-human transmission.’

‘While there is no evidence that sustained human-to-human transmission is occurring, all influenza viruses have the capacity to change and it’s possible that this virus may become widespread,’ the CDC explained through their website.

America should not be allowed to dominate the debate over who controls sensitive scientific information that could be misused in biowarfare terrorism, say the scientists who created a highly dangerous form of bird-flu virus in a study that has been partially censored by the US government.

Ron Fouchier and Ab Osterhaus of Erasmus Medical Centre in Rotterdam accept recommendations by the US government’s National Science Advisory Board for Biosecurity, which said key details of their US-funded research should not be published because bioterrorists may use the information to cause a bird-flu pandemic.

“But we do question whether it is appropriate to have one country dominate a discussion that has an impact on scientists and public-health officials worldwide,” Fouchier and Osterhaus write in the journal Nature.

As The Independent reported in December, Dr Fouchier and colleagues created a strain of H5N1 bird-flu virus that can be spread by airborne transmission between laboratory ferrets, the standard animal “model” for human influenza. They did it to see how easy it would be for the virus to mutate into a form that could cause a pandemic.

Details of the genetic mutations could prove vital for scientists engaged in the early-warning surveillance of new strains of flu virus, as well as researchers involved in creating new vaccines and anti-viral drugs. But the details could be misused by rogue states or by biowarfare terrorists with access to rudimentary scientific knowledge and fairly standard laboratory equipment. Previously, it was thought the H5N1 bird-flu virus, which appeared in birds in 1996, could only be transmitted to people by close contact with infected poultry, rather than by airborne transmission from one person to another.

If the H5N1 bird-flu strain mutated into an airborne form, it could result in one of the deadliest pandemics in history, where more than half of those infected die – a mortality rate that would dwarf other flu outbreaks.

So far, most of the 600 or so deaths from H5N1 have resulted from close contact between people and poultry and have occurred almost exclusively in Asia and the Middle East where keeping domestic poultry is common. Dr Fouchier and Professor Osterhaus were among experts asked by Nature to give opinions on recommendations of the US National Science Advisory Board for Biosecurity, which wants key details of their study, such as the precise genetic sequence of the mutated virus, to be withheld from publication.

Lynn Klotz of the Centre for Arms Control and Non-Proliferation in Washington and Ed Sylvester of Arizona State University say the chances of a laboratory strain of H5N1 escaping into the wild remain high if it is stored in conventional flu-virus labs. "Regulators should not be sitting idly by, while the threat of a man-made pandemic looms," the scientists say.

Scientists who created easier-to-spread versions of the deadly bird flu said yesterday that they are temporarily halting more research, as international specialists debate what should happen next.

Researchers from leading flu laboratories around the world signed onto the voluntary moratorium, published yesterday in the journals Science and Nature.

What the scientists called a “pause’’ comes amid fierce controversy over how to handle research that is high-risk but potentially could bring a big payoff. Two labs – at Erasmus University in the Netherlands and the University of Wisconsin Madison – created the new viruses while studying how bird flu might mutate to become a bigger threat to people...

If H5N1 bird flu, which has a 60-percent fatality rate, were engineered to spread like seasonal flu, hundreds of millions of lives would be at risk, a scientist told the Senate Homeland Security Committee on Thursday.

“What happens if a mammalian transmissible H5N1 flu starts to spread?” Thomas Inglesby, CEO and director of the Center for Biosecurity at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, asked rhetorically in his testimony.

“Seasonal flu affects 10 to 20 percent of the world every year–as much as a billion people or more,” said Inglesby. “The case fatality rate of wild H5N1 in the WHO database is nearly 60 percent, as you indicated. So if a strain of H5N1 with that fatality rate were engineered to spread like seasonal flu, hundreds of millions of people’s lives would be at risk. Even a strain a hundred times less fatal would place at risk millions of people’s lives.”

The National Institute of Health released its policy last month on dual-use research, which is designed to implement recommendations made in a 2003 National Academy of Sciences report titled, “Biotechnology Research in an Age of Terrorism.” Concern has grown recently over advances in the field of biotechnology, in which scientists have created synthetic viruses in laboratories.
