Hilmar von Campe, a former member of the Hitler Youth and a World War II veteran, warns that America’s collective departure from God is leading to the state being granted ultimate authority and threatens to repeat the rise of National Socialism. He argues that the policies of the Obama White House, and the actions of the U.S. government more generally, now resemble Nazi political doctrines more closely than the principles of America’s Founding Fathers.
Von Campe explains that after returning from the war, he was determined to understand how the German people—who had been a relatively cultured and civilized nation before the rise of the Nazis—could have allowed a monster like Hitler to create the Third Reich. He attributes the Nazi seizure of power in Germany to godlessness, a collapse of morality, and the German people acting contrary to God’s will. Based on these conclusions, he says he has developed an approach intended to help prevent nations from falling victim to tyranny in the future.
Von Campe describes how children were indoctrinated by the state through the education system to embrace Nazi ideology and were encouraged to spy on and report their own parents if they did not share the same beliefs. According to him, this was done to break apart families and establish a single ideology. He also explains that the Nazis insisted that discussions of God and religion be excluded from public life in order to ensure that people would not recognize any higher authority than the state and therefore would offer no resistance to the Nazi takeover.
Von Campe warns that the process of removing God from society and education, together with what he describes as the erosion of America’s Christian foundations, resembles the way National Socialism became established in Germany during the 1930s. He further argues that the U.S. Senate, Congress, and the Obama White House now resemble the Nazis more than America’s Founding Fathers.
