Carroll Quigley describes in his book The Evolution of Civilizations: An Introduction to Historical Analysis the factors underlying the rise and fall of civilizations. The book was first published in 1961. According to Quigley, a civilization passes through seven predictable stages. The seventh and final stage also serves as the first stage of the next civilization.
